Synthetic media is filling our feeds, news sources, and messages. Yet it is often unclear whether audio, video, and images are authentic, and much is not. Deepfakes and other inauthentic, hyper-realistic imagery are distorting public discourse in ways large and small. Government agencies are sharing deepfakes, turning citizens into props for government propaganda. Students are creating deepfake sexual imagery of mostly female classmates. The risks to democracy are profound and will be at the heart of our conversation.
