The Phoenix City Council first approved the new Office of Accountability and Transparency (OAT) in 2020. The office's main roles are monitoring or investigating members of the Phoenix Police Department and ensuring complaints against officers are handled fairly and objectively. The new office may also provide recommendations for training, policy, and disciplinary actions.
We have invited the Kate Otting, Director of Mediation, and Roger Smith, Director, from OAT to speak on civilian oversight and the law in Phoenix, as well as nationally. As a career civilian oversight professional, Roger Smith will provide foundational information about OAT and civilian oversight. Kate Otting will present on how mediation fits into that context and how similar programs within civilian oversight are operating around the country.
This training will give you insight into the purpose and work of OAT, as well as the everyday impact it has on our community.
